A day in the life of a Video Editor in Mexico

Open up an Instagram portfolio, build your website, and be professional.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for Stargazer.co

What do you do?

It's an influencer marketing agency. I do film editing.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I needed a job that I could do as a freelancer.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes. My aim was towards ILM, DNEG, and other similar companies but I needed to pay back a student loan so I started working on whatever I could, which ended up being motion graphics for a sports broadcast company for three months and now freelance film editing due to coronavirus.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I wake up and I see what work I need to download. And then I start to work. I usually take two days to do the job because the internet is slow and I need to download the files first and then upload them in we transfer and send them.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Yes, having a stable income because as a freelancer it depends on the availability of the jobs. People don't always want videos to be edited but other times they do.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

I work at home so I try to put schedules/ deadline times and respect them. And afterwards I can have leisure time for family and exercise.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Pole Exercise Society - good friends and healthy habits to do at home (abs and legs workouts).

Extracurricular activities - making friends and traveling. I enjoy being kind to others, share good advice of things that work for me and just being a better human.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Work for DNEG, ILM or The Mill in Montreal, Canada.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Study Houdini, and C4D besides knowing well Nuke and After Effects if you want the well paid jobs. Otherwise go for what you feel you do best, if it's illustration sell them and take marketing courses. If you want to do animation dig into Maya. And use social media the right way. Open up an Instagram portfolio, build your website, and be professional. Work hard, learn, be humble and be proud of your work. The more time you spend on your work the more it will be reflected.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Software, career options, and thesis dissertations.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

I love my career, but I know it's important to be flexible so I always try to learn things not related to animation or film on the side. It's always handy to know things about business, marketing, and economics specially if you want to be independent.
