A day in the life of a Internal Audit Manager in the United Kingdom
I was the president of the York Hong Kong Society, member of dancesoc, fusion and a regular volunteer. It has helped me show that I am a well rounded person, with demonstrated abilities to negotiate, work with others and manage a team.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
FTSE 50 - diversified portfolio of businesses including academic publishing, exhibitions, conferencing, data consulting and etc.
What do you do?
I work in internal audit, testing and assessing the internal control environment
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I started off at EY in their oil and gas assurance business. Going into internal audit is one of the more common routes but that's not to say I can't move into anything I want from here.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No - but I have always wanted a job where I can travel.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Meeting with senior management where I had to deliver some negative news. I prepared a number of solutions for this issue as well. The meeting went down well.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was the president of the York Hong Kong Society, member of dancesoc, fusion and a regular volunteer. It has helped me show that I am a well rounded person, with demonstrated abilities to negotiate, work with others and manage a team.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Look for an internship, read a wide range of relevant publications to show enthusiasm for your field and broaden your horizon, show a willingness to work hard for an opportunity and don't expect to succeed straightaway.
