A day in the life of a Vision Mixer in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I am freelance
What do you do?
I am a vision mixer, which means I cut or transition between cameras, graphics, VTs and other sources for multicamera television. I work in drama, light entertainment, live music and news.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Vision mixing in the studios at TFTV! I then studied vision mixing at the NFTS.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No, I’m lucky enough to be doing exactly what I’d hoped to!
Describe your most memorable day at work
Vision mixing my first BBC Prom was both very emotional!
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
It can be high pressure as even a small mistake is so visible! You need to stay calm and keep up high levels of concentration.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
As a freelancer it’s very varied, but all of my paid work is done from either a TV gallery or OB truck - then most of the rest of my work is at home, procuring jobs, researching for upcoming jobs, and keeping up to date with the latest broadcast technology.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
YSTV was great fun and gave me some opportunities to vision mix music!
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
TV is hugely competitive, so don’t be disheartened if you find it tough to get a job - just keep going! There are Facebook groups for runner jobs that can be helpful and supportive.
