A day in the life of a Director of Institutional Giving in the United States

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Children's advocacy non-profit

What do you do?

Raise money from foundations and corporates

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I stumbled into the development field after an MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights but ended up loving it.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I knew I wanted to enter the non-profit sector; less so raising money for them.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Galas are always memorable; it's usually the most critical day for the organization and involves a huge deal of pressure ensuring that every detail is correct and that every guest (who might have paid huge amounts) are happy.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I played a few sports, was in DramaSoc, and headed the university branch of Amnesty International. I'm sure they helped with many transferable skills but to be honest I did them because they interested in me and/or were fun.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Feel free to reach out to us oldies. I promise we don't bite :)

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Getting into the non-profit sector; tips on fundraising and development; internships; getting the first job.
