A day in the life of a Programme Policy Officer in Afghanistan

Working towards achieving the 2030 agenda of sustainable development in Afghanistan

How I looked for work

My basic principle for job is that i only apply for jobs that are in the fields i am passionate to work in. In addition, i look for the impact of the job at community level. I search and apply through job portals and target specific organizations that are working in the humanitarian and development fields.

How studying in the UK affected my job seeking

Being a graduate from a UK university helps you a lot to grab attention of the recruiters because they value UK universities and their education standards. Studying in the UK helps you get a chance to appear before the panel and prove yourself as a best fit for the job

My advice to students considering work

Focus on specific areas that are not only aligned with your education qualification but also that you are passionate about to work in. In today's world equip with latest technologies, there are load of trainings available and try to get some of those. Read the terms of reference of a job and place yourself in the shoe of recruiters and think about "Why you are a best fit". This will help you to prepare accordingly.

What I do

I provide support to policy and programme activities that effectively meet the mandate of the organization. My responsibilities include: Contributing towards the development of a wide variety of projects, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider programme policies and guidance.

Skills I use and how I developed them

strategic thinking, programme/projects management, communication and coordination, and creativity and innovation are the skills i employ in my daily work. I have developed these skills over the course of my professional career by working in different capacities and exposing myself to various and complicated working environments.

What I like most

Working towards achieving sustainable development where everyone is better off and is living with access to at least basic services.

What surprised me most

The food insecurity and poverty rates in Afghanistan are not only surprising but alarming. A great deal of attention and commitment is required to deal with it.
