A day in the life of a Summer Intern in the United Kingdom

My advice to students considering work
Go where you feel culturally aligned to work and one which has opportunity for growth.
Other advice
It's okay to not know what you want to do and be honest about it when it comes to interviews, as long as you show the right competencies any good employer will have you!

What I do
Summer Intern within the funds division of First Names Group, based out in Jersey and operating in 14 jurisdictions. During my internship, I was assigned project based tasks to be run either independently or as part of an international team. It involved 8 weeks living abroad away from friends and family.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Excel - There is so much analytics which can be made from raw data and my first Customer Relationship Management project highlighted this.
Communication - A vital skill which overlaps into every aspect of your role, it might be agreeing a deadline or being specific in information you require to complete a task.
Resilience - Projects will not always run smoothly and you will face challenges. However, breaking the task down into manageable chunks and asking for help if needed is important.
What I like most
The corporate culture, First Names Group is truly people focused and it is displayed every day within our interactions. Everyone is known by their first names, we don't wear ties in the office and run regular social/charity events.
Approachable management committee, in particular if a certain aspect of the business interests you (although not being based in their department) they arrange one to one sessions to chat about the topic! Plus, in not many places can you have an hour chatting to the CEO, discussing the business plan for the next 5 years and giving direct recommendations to improve the business right to the top.
Trust, they allowed me to attend extremely important meetings and gave me direct exposure to clients. In which, in one particular instance I was able to chat freely with the representative of one of our largest clients.
Plus, when the weather is good we go down to the beach after work to chill out and just enjoy the Jersey sunshine.
What I like least
Struggling to think of any! Although, island culture is quite close-knit by its very nature so it certainly suits some but sometimes not others.
What surprised me most
The exposure they provide, allowing me to meet with clients and actually have dialogue within board meetings. So not feeling like a spare part or being there just to make the coffee/tea. First Names Group, provided me with projects to complete so that I had tangible work to take away from the experience.
