We have a huge range of students at York studying many different academic subjects.

We'll update this page each week, so you can see what some of our current students have to say about what studying, living and socialising at York is really like.

Hello, I'm Abby and I am a First Year Chemistry student. I'm part of the brass band, playing the tuba. I really recommend getting involved in societies - for me, it's become a really solid group of friends. People are incredibly accepting and settling into uni life became much easier because I had interactions with a range of people.

Hi everyone, I'm Alex, and I'm currently a Third Year studying History. When it comes to sports and societies, you should throw yourself right into anything that interests you. If something isn't for you, you never have to go again. If it is however, you could come out with friends for life.

Hi everyone! I'm Amy and I'm a Second Year Archaeology and Heritage student. When I came to York I was quickly overwhelmed with the number of societies. It may take a while to look at them all but I would highly recommend giving some of them ago - having something to look forward to can really boost your mood in a stressful week. I even started my own society - Sober Society!

Hi everyone, I'm Ari, a First Year Psychology student. I play Quidditch for the University team. Being part of Quidditch has really made my experience at university amazing, and its how I've found some of my now closest friends. I recommend going to as many Give it a Go sessions as possible - it's how I joined Quidditch!

I'm Chenaiyi and I'm a postgraduate studying Global Literature and Culture. My top tips are to try something you've never done before - go to Freshers' Fair and commit to at least one thing. First Year is the perfect time to get stuck in because you have lots of time.

I'm Chloe and I am a Second Year English and Related Literature student. Go to a Give it a Go session, where in the first week of term some societies give taster sessions that are reduced price or free. This is the perfect time to get stuck in - I'd urge you to step out of your comfort zone because there are some amazing opportunities.

I'm Christopher and I'm a Masters student studying Medieval History. I was President of Philosophy Society which really improved my public speaking, on top of making close friendships. York has a wide range of societies so there's a chance for all to get stuck in!

Hi there! I'm Morgan, and I study Computer Science and Mathematics (with a Year in Industry), and I'm a Second Year. Freshers' Fair is a must go event, where you can speak to all of the societies and sports teams. Keep an open mind and try something knew.

Hi guys, my name is Tommy and I’m a Final Year Neuroscience student. There's plenty of socities (over 200!) and sports clubs you can get involved in. There's loads of opportunities to compete, such as at Roses - the biggest inter-university varsity competition in Europe!
