PhD Spotlight competition winners 2018

Tom Stoneham, Dean of the Graduate Research School, congratulates (L-R) Claire McGinn, Jill Simpson, and Rebecca Hall

Last week, nine PhD researchers took part in the PhD Spotlight competition as part of YorkTalks 2018.

Subjects ranged from how chimps communicate to whether machines can help us live forever, from smart medicines to better uses for corpse 'waste'. Each participant found engaging ways to present their research to a non-specialist audience. Winners from each Faculty, plus an overall winner, were chosen by Vice-Chancellor, Koen Lamberts:

  • Social Sciences and overall winner: Jill Simpson, Sociology
  • Arts and Humanities winner: Claire McGinn, Music
  • Sciences winner: Rebecca Hall, Biology
