Professor Dr Ursula Apitzsch

Professor Dr. Ursula Apitzsch is full Professor of Sociology and Political Science at J.W. Goethe University and member of the Board of Directors of the Frankfurt Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies.  She has teaching experience as a visiting professor at the universities of Swansea, UK (1991); University of California/Berkeley, USA (1992 and 1993); Firenze, Italy (1994); Roma, Italy (1998); Bologna, Italy (1999).  Professor Apitzsch researches and publishes broadly within the fields of culture, developmental and migration studies, having a wide experience in empirical social research, with special regard to qualitative methods. She has participated in, and co-ordinated, European research projects.

 In October 2000 Prof. Apitzsch was elected  Dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Science. From 1995 until 1999, she was President of the section of “Biographical Research” within the “German Sociological Association” (DGS/Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie).  She is also a board member of the Research Committee “Biography and Society” within the “International Sociological Association” (ISA). Between 1997 and 2000 she was the scientific coordinator of the TSER-project "Self-employment activities of women and minorities: their success or failure in relation to social citizenship policies" (PL 97-3211).

Her recent publications include 'Biographien in Europa. Neue Dimensionen des Sozialen,' in: Franz Hamburger et al, eds. Gestaltung des Sozialen – eine Herausforderung für Europa (Leske+Budrich, 2002), and 'Ausländische Kinder und Jugendliche,' in:  Heinz-Hermann Krüger and Cathleen Grunert, eds. Handbuch Kindheits- und Jugendforschung (Leske+Budrich, 2002).
