About the University

Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. In 2014 it is home to over thirty academic departments and research centres with a student body of around 16,000. In less than fifty years we have become one of the World's leading universities and a recent member to the prestigious Russell Group.

The University has consistently been recognised as one of the leading Higher Education Institutes in the UK and is one of just six post-war universities which appear in the World top 100. In the last five years we have won five Times Higher Education Awards and received an equal number of Queen’s Anniversary Prizes. We are particularly proud of our association with Athena SWAN in supporting female scientists, holding several awards.

Centered around the picturesque village of Heslington on the edge of the city of York, our colleges are set in an attractive landscaped campus. It is compact, easy to get around, and has a safe, friendly atmosphere. The campus offers a wealth of facilities, with bars, shops, theatres and concert halls all within easy walking distance.

As an employer the University aims to offer a nurturing and supportive environment. Flexible working hours, crèche facilities, generous holidays and an attractive pension scheme all make the University of York one of the region’s leading employers. These are just a few of the benefits available to employees.
