On graduating from York, I went on to study for a Masters in Public Policy and Administration at LSE. Since then, I have worked for the civil service, the private sector and the Labour party.
In 2008 I started my first graduate job at the Home Office, where I was part of their System Wide Issues and Futures team, which was responsible for carrying out Horizon Scanning, looking ahead ten years or more to test policy / strategy against possible future changes. After working there for just under a year I joined the graduate scheme at PwC.
At PwC I was part of the Consulting team, with a focus on the public sector. I worked with a broad range of clients, across sectors including education, housing and Local Government. My work included supporting clients with policy work, conducting research and writing reports / publications, project management, workshop facilitation and strategy design.
The courses I took as part of my PPE degree were not only enjoyable, but the diversity of the degree prepared me well for adapting quickly to working in a wide range of sectors and on a wide variety of tasks.
After almost three years at PwC, I am now a Political Adviser at the Labour Party, working for the Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. My main focus is on policy work - specifically on low carbon jobs and growth, and energy market reform, but covering a wide range of policy issues.
Seven years and three very different jobs later, PPE at York is proving to have been a good way to start my career.
