Where are our graduates now?

Arif Kadir (PPE)

After graduating from York with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, I returned to Malaysia where I joined PETRONAS, the national oil company of Malaysia.

PPE at York is rigorous, stimulating, and rewarding, and is rightly considered one of the best in the country.

PETRONAS is rapidly expanding its international operations and my work largely involves developing the company’s international profile. This includes determining the level of risk in doing business in various countries, supporting the resolution of regional and cross-business issues, and managing relationships with international organizations like APEC or ASEAN. I specialize in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, which are highly volatile areas but are also considered pivotal to the industry with most of the world’s hydrocarbon reserves. Some of the countries where we maintain investments include Iran, Sudan, and Algeria, which can make my job very interesting (especially with the US placing sanctions on some of these countries)!

The PPE degree at York has been invaluable in preparing me for this position. In an obvious way, PPE has enabled me to assess the economic and political risk of investing in different countries. However, I believe that the greater value of the degree lies in its inter-disciplinary approach. The diversity of the course has provided me with the analytical tools and flexibility in approach to deal with complex and evolving situations.

I have an edge over most Malaysians because the course emphasizes the development of key transferable skills that are applicable regardless of the actual job.

PPE at York is rigorous, stimulating, and rewarding, and is rightly considered one of the best in the country. Highly recommended.
