Dr Kaisa Hinkkainen Elliott

I received my MA in International Conflict Analysis from University of Kent in 2008 and my PhD in International Relations from University of Essex in 2013. Prior to joining York, I was a Lecturer in International Relations at University of Lincoln 2013-2017 and a University Academic Fellow at University of Leeds 2017-2019. I have also been a visiting researcher at Uppsala University and University of Venice in 2019.

I am interested in terrorism, conflict processes and resolution, natural resources, geographical and quantitative methods.

My research has focussed on economic sanctions and terrorism, child soldiers and peacekeeping as well as state use of militias in conflicts. My current projects investigate diffusion dynamics and locations of fighting and how these micro-dynamics translate to macro-outcomes of conflicts. My work has been published, for example, in Journal of Politics and Journal of Peace Research. I am also working on investigating tactical choices of rebel groups and their determinants.

In the 2019/20 academic year, I am teaching the following modules:

First year: Political Enquiry

PhD:  Personal and Professional Skills (convenor)
