Light's Twist

Wednesday 4 March 2015, 2.00PM

Speaker(s): Professor Miles Padgett FRS, Kelvin Chair of Natural Philosophy, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Glasgow

That light travels in straight lines is a statement of the obvious. But within light beams the energy and momentum flow can twist and twirl like eddies in a stream. These twists carry angular momentum that make microscopic objects spin, encode extra information within light beams and allow new tests of quantum mechanics.
