In the week of the 9th September 2019, David Jenkins gave the opening keynote address at the International Conference on Nuclear Structure Properties at Bitlis Eren University in Turkey. This is the annual Turkish nuclear physics conference attracting participants from across Turkey and adjoining countries such as Iran and Pakistan. Prof Jenkins spoke about his research on carbon fusion in massive stars and direct measurements of this fusion reaction at the IPN Orsay Laboratory in France. The local organizer of the conference was Dr Nuray Yavuzkanat who completed her PhD at York in 2016 under Prof. Jenkins’ supervision. She developed a novel miniaturised detector for PET isotope assay based on a microfluidic chip, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hull. This invention has been patented and is now progressing towards commercialisation.
