Photonics West is the worlds largest photonics conference.

Giampaolo Pitruzzello at Photonics West

PhD student Giampaolo Pitruzzello and Jose Juan Colas, a post-doc from the Condensed Matter Physics (CMP) institute, attended Photonics West, the worlds largest photonics conference, in San Francisco, between 27 January and 01 February 2018.

The event includes three conferences with over five thousand presentations, over 20 thousand attendees and two exhibitions with 1500 booths, plus product demonstrations, workshops, courses and networking events.

Giampaolo Pitruzzello was awarded the third prize in a three-minute poster pitch competition. Fifteen students had been selected among all the (student) applicants to give a rapid-fire overview of their posters. The judges were from the editorial boards of the Journal of Biomedical Optics and Neurophotonics, which sponsored the competition and awarded a cash prize of $100. The poster is entitled "Fast antimicrobial susceptibility test based on hydrodynamic trapping of single bacteria", which fits in the research on antimicrobial resistance that the CMP institute is currently pursuing.
