On 10 March 2020, Dr Laurence Wilson, Emma Brock (PhD student) and Tim Ayers (Electronics workshop) joined teams from all over Europe and the USA, including a group from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, to test equipment (including a Mars Rover) as well as study the geology and microbial life present in the mine.

The team from York tested the latest designs in their drone-based sample collection equipment, including the first run with a new ‘amphibious’ drone, demonstrating the ability to land on water before taking off again to return to dry land. The data they collected supports an ongoing programme of research into life at extreme conditions.
