Michael was Emeritus Professor in the Department of Physics. Michael served as Head of the Department of Physics from 1982 to 1987.
Michael made huge contributions in the area of X-ray crystallography, with his interpretive computer packages responsible for almost half the crystal structures determined by the world community in the 1980s.
In addition to this, he had a keen interest in planetary science and the origins of the Solar System. In recognition of his work, Michael was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984 and awarded the prestigious Hughes Medal in 1986.
