Professor Howard Wilson honoured by American Physical Society

Posted on 19 November 2013

University of York physicist Professor Howard Wilson receives international award for research excellence from The American Physical Society (APS).

The Department are delighted to announce that Professor Howard Wilson, Director of the York Plasma Institute, was jointly awarded the 2013 John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research. The award recognises research explaining the limiting edge instabilities of high performance tokamak plasmas, including the key role of peel-ballooning modes, thus enabling quantitative predictions of the edge pressure in fusion plasmas. The research was carried out by Howard along with three American colleagues - Dr John, Ferron, Dr Thomas Osborne and Dr Philip Snyder from General Atomics, San Diego, California.

Congratulating Howard, Professor Sarah Thompson said: "This is much deserved recognition for the excellence and impact of Howard's research".

Howard travelled to Denver, Colarado to receive the award at the Division of Plasma Physics 55th Annual Meeting. For further information please see the Universities news item.
