Royal Institute of Philosophy Lecture: Krister Bykvist

Thursday 17 May 2018, 6.00PM to 8pm

Speaker(s): Professor Krister Bykvist, University of Stockholm, Institute for Future Studies, Stockholm

Title: Transformative Choice and Well-Being

Abstract:

Some choices are truly transformative. They change our core identity and our fundamental preferences and values. Think of choosing a career, moving to a new country, undergoing a sex change, getting married, becoming a parent, joining a war, and converting to a religion. Such cases pose a problem for attitude-sensitive accounts of wellbeing and prudence: How can we find a stable standard of well-being if the standard is in part defined in terms of unstable attitudes? How can we act prudentially if our actions change the attitudes that determine our wellbeing? In my talk, I will suggest some answers to these pressing questions.
