Would you kill the fat man?

Tuesday 14 January 2014, 6.30PM

Speaker(s): David Edmonds, BBC and University of Oxford

David Edmonds talks about his latest book Would You Kill The Fat Man at York Cocoa House on Tuesday 14 January at 6.30pm:

Suppose you were out for walk and whilst crossing a railway bridge met a fat man.  Would you push him over the bridge?  One hopes not.  But what if, by doing so, you could stop a runaway train from killing five people tied to a track?  David Edmonds' latest book, 'Would You Kill The Fat Man?' is about a famous puzzle in philosophy and was an 'Editor's Choice' in the New York Times.

  • David Edmonds is a senior research associate at Oxford's Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and a multi-award winning radio feature maker with the BBC.  His books have been translated in to 25 languages and include Bobby Fischer Goes to War and the international best seller Wittgenstein's Poker (co-written with John Eidinow).  He co-runs Philosophy Bites (http://www.philosophybites.com/), which now has 20 million downloads to date.

This event is hosted in association with the Department of Philosophy, University of York.
