Internship opportunities open up for York students

Exciting partnerships are developing between the University and major companies to secure exclusive paid internship opportunities for York students.

Professor Mike Cordner (L) and Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Jane Grenville (R), with Susan McGuire and Kevin Wood of ATG, during the company's recent visit to launch the graduate internship programmeColleagues from the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) launched a scheme this week which will give York students an opportunity to access exclusive graduate internships. ATG is the largest owner/operator of theatres in the UK with 39 venues, an internationally recognised theatre producer and a leader in theatre ticketing services through ATG Tickets.

Professor Mike Cordner, Head of Theatre in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, commented, “This is an invaluable link, which will offer a unique entry point for the successful candidates into a highly competitive industry.”

Susan McGuire, Head of HR at the company, added “This exciting connection with York will enable a select number of graduates to experience our diverse range of creative, production and management activities.” The scheme will be named after Greg Dyke, the University’s Chancellor and Chairman of ATG.

A range of other opportunities have also been created for York students to gain valuable employability skills, including an internship programme with the Index on Censorship, an internationally leading campaigning organisation for freedom of expression. The scheme will also launch this term, with students encouraged to apply for a 6 month paid graduate internship.

The ambitious programme of internship opportunities at York is driven by the Careers Service's Student Internship Bureau, which has grown to offer over 50 high quality paid projects for this summer. The SIB provides a flexible service throughout the year, including part-time projects for doctoral and masters students, as well as undergraduates who undertake projects around their studies. Unique projects are agreed between the employer and the Careers Service, to ensure that they add value to both the business and the student's experience.

Organisations as large as Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) through to one person business have engaged with students through the service. Recent projects have included the research and writing of a history of the Betty's and Taylors brand, the development of a full corporate responsibility strategy for a major rail company, and organising a high profile product launch for a small engineering firm.
