Research in Focus

Wherever you walk in the ancient walled city of York you are never too far away from the deceased. By walking through spaces and places in York you can explore and reflect upon human mortality. Walking is a distinct method which introduces people to the rich history of death, dying and disposal of the dead in evocative ways across time. The York Death and Culture Walk offers an open access self guided walk through York’s city centre, providing a way of both knowing and understanding mortality in city spaces and a powerful tool for understanding the lives, deaths and lived experiences of others. At this launch of the York Death and Culture Walk, an opening lecture, exhibition and cinematic experience will introduce you to buildings, landmarks, people and places that aid in your connection, in sensory and corporeal ways, to the city’s history and wider contemporary challenges in dealing with human mortality.
