Philosophy and the Arts

Painting and photography are very different media, even when we have a painting that looks very much like a photograph. What are the differences? They stem from the different ways these kinds of pictures are made. But the differences also produce quite different effects on an audience. One difference is to do with the very different interest we take in the picture surface. In this talk Gregory is going to try to be clear about how the surface matters in painting in a way it does not matter in photography.
