University of York Friends of the Library and Archives Inaugural Lecture
The University of York presents the Inaugural Lecture of the Friends of the University of York Library and Archives, our supporters circle launched in June this year.
Professor Brian Cummings will give a lecture, "The Cult of the Book", which will re-examine 400 years of the relationship between the worship of idols and the worship of books, and the way weview books both as ‘things’ and as visual signs.
The Lecture will take place in the new Spring Lane Learning and Teaching Building, opened in October. This is an early opportunity to experience this exciting new space.
The University Library and Archives holds a special place in the academic and local community, comprising many special collections, study resources and learning spaces. These are a nucleus for ideas, providing a physical – and now digital – locus for staff, students and researchers from York and beyond to be inspired and to explore innovative ideas and conduct world-class research.
The Friends of the Library and Archive is an important initiative which will help to develop facilities and collections, and in return members will enjoy lectures, access and other benefits. You can find out more at www.yorkspace.net/giving/friends-of-the-library.
