Julie Parker

Alexander Technique

Born and schooled in Zimbabwe, Julie followed a degree in Mathematics from the University of Cape Town, with a career in Investment Fund Management. Continual headaches combined with an interest in self development and in working with the body led her to the Alexander Technique. She was so excited by the transformation this brought about that she decided to undertake the 3 year training to become a teacher.

Since then, she has taught the Technique to many different people from all walks of life. She offers Performance Coaching and Alexander Technique Lessons to both undergraduate and post graduate students in the Department of Music, and has worked with staff across many different departments, including IEE (Institute for Effective Education), Health Sciences, Technology, History, Energy Conservation and Music. She also continues to run a private practice and to give workshops and talks on the Alexander Technique, both nationally and internationally, and is a guest teacher at the York Alexander Training School.

She has also worked with the Department of Health Sciences on the ATLAS Clinical Trial – a £720,000 three year trial investigating the effectiveness of Alexander Technique and Acupuncture as interventions for Chronic Neck Pain. Results of this trial were published in 2016.

Coaching

In 2007 Julie undertook an accredited Relational Dynamics Coaching Course (an ILM 7 accredited course through Coaching at work, qualifying with distinction). The course differs from traditional coaching skills training and expands distinctly into the arena of relational dynamics (our interactions with and understanding of, self and others). The training is multi-functional and can be used to enhance leadership, facilitation and mentoring skills in addition to qualifying one to practise as a Relational Dynamic Coach on a 1-1 basis.

Her diverse experiences of life and work in different continents, cities and working cultures have given her a deep understanding of change management and empathy for the challenges which this presents. It is her experience (gained over 25 years of working), that all these aspects of study create a powerful alchemy, and allow her to facilitate growth, creativity and change at a deep level, both in herself and others.
