MCC Listening and Reading Group

This listening group, open to all interested music undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff, is part of the Musical Cultures and Communities Research Cluster.

Every other week a student, staff member or guest introduces a piece of music, record, or set of works and the critical themes that surround them through a related reading, followed by an open and friendly discussion about the music and themes introduced. These sessions are part of the strong collaborative and discursive community around the MCC and are a fantastic opportunity to combine critical reading and discussions of texts with active listening and to bounce ideas off each other in a friendly and informal space.

Previous sessions have included Colin Self's Siblings and Donna Haraway's 'Cyborg Manifesto', William Basinski's Disintegration Loops and Theodor Adorno's "The Form of the Phonograph Record," Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters and Helen Davies' "All Rock and Roll is Homosocial," and Gabriel Dharmoo's Anthropologies Imaginaire with Laboria Cuboniks' Xenofeminist Manifesto.

We meet every other week on Thursdays at 5pm. For more information, or to offer to lead a session, please contact Alice Masterson <alice.masterson@york.ac.uk> and Jack McNeill <bjma500@york.ac.uk>
