Maddy Withers

Maddy Withers earned her bachelor’s degree in Music from Hertford College, University of Oxford in 2020. During her undergraduate she studied Music Perception, researching how modality effected melody memorization and recognition and how exposure to non-Western music could enhance the perception of modal variation.

As a saxophonist and jazz singer, jazz has always been at the centre of Maddy’s research. Her undergraduate dissertation was an ethnographic study which focused on audience behavioural tropes in jazz and blues clubs in Chicago, looking at the ways in which venues were set up to enhance particular responses to the music and musicians.

She hopes to continue exploring the cognitive and perceptual responses to jazz in both musicians and fans. She is particularly interested in how specific musical features in improvised solos can enhance audience enjoyment and excitement.
