Department of Music choral scholarships

Two students per undergraduate year are awarded choral scholarships, receiving £1,000 per annum with duties to include participation in certain vocal ensembles and small administrative tasks. The scholarship lasts one year. The basis for the scholarship awards will be based upon vocal ability, musicality and general attitude. This scholarship cannot be applied for in advance of receiving a place in the Department.

York Minster choral scholarships

York Minster offers choral and organ scholarships lasting 12 months or longer to altos, tenors and basses who are undergraduate or postgraduate students. (The treble part is sung by choristers who are educated at the Minster School).

The scholarships become available as vacancies occur. They are available to any music or non-music students at the University of York. Duties include sung services throughout the week, during and outside of university terms. Scholars benefit enormously from singing the church's greatest choral music in Europe's largest gothic cathedral.

The Director of Music is pleased to hear from prospective scholars both for possible vacancies and for regular deputising opportunities.

The current value of the scholarships is approximately £5,740 per annum plus extra fees for recordings and special services.

Enquiries should be directed to Robert Sharpe, Director of Music, York Minster, as soon as possible.

Yorkshire Bach Choir Award

These awards are to pay for vocal lessons, for instance to non-music students contributing to Music Department ensembles, and singing in the Yorkshire Bach Choir or to increase the lesson allowance of Music students, particularly those who are part-time and specialising in performance. The awards are open to undergraduates, MA or PhD students.

St Wilfrid's Church scholarships

St Wilfrid’s Catholic Church, York, offers four choral scholarships lasting 12 months to sopranos, altos, tenors and basses to form a quartet. Scholarships are available to female and male undergraduate and postgraduate students.

They are available to any music or non-music students at the University of York. Duties include two services on Sundays (Latin Mass and Latin Vespers & Benediction) during the university terms, with additional Masses during the week on Holy Days, Holy Week and Easter. Scholars benefit enormously from the unique opportunity to sing traditional Catholic music within the liturgy for which it was written, and in a church with a superb acoustic.

The repertoire will be drawn from the classical tradition of the Catholic Church, and will include polyphonic Mass settings by such composers as Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria, etc, as well as occasional settings by Mozart, Haydn, etc. Similarly there will be motets also drawn from the Latin tradition.

The current annual value of the scholarship awards is £1,300 per singer per year, plus extra fees for weddings and special services.

Auditions, which may be recorded or live, are held in June of the preceding year.
