A celebration of the life of Lady Penelope Rich (1563-1607)
Music by Dowland, Coprario, Byrd, Sir Philip Sidney with readings from Shakespeare and Sir Philip Sidney
Lady Penelope Rich was one of the most celebrated women of her age and in her short, ultimately tragic, life she experienced wildly fluctuating fortunes. This programme follows that life, ending with Dowland’s celebrated Lacrimae Pavan.
University of York Folk Group
Penguin Eggs (who take their name from the seminal 1980 album by Nic Jones) focusses on old English folk music: songs, tunes, ballads as well as sea shanties – and a sound very distinctive from that of its Celtic counterparts.
Jochama Piano Trio
Hummel Piano Trio in E flat op.12
Smetana Piano Trio in G minor op. 15
Jochama comprises three postgraduate students on the MA in Performance Practice course. Hummel’s trio bridges the Classical era and the newly-emerging Romantic style in music. Written after the death of his young daughter, the trio by Smetana encompasses virtuosic writing for the instruments and a sense of melancholy.
