Peter Seymour's St Matthew Passion recording released on Signum Records

Posted on 23 April 2015

Professor Peter Seymour’s recording of JS Bach’s early version of St Matthew Passion (BWV 244b) was released by Signum Records in February 2015. Recorded at the National Centre for Early Music this is the first commercial recording of the version, here in Peter Seymour’s new edition.

Peter directs his ensemble Yorkshire Baroque Soloists with singers Charles Daniels (Evangelist) and Peter Harvey (Christus); the other soloists, who also form the two choirs, are Bethany Seymour, Helen Neeves, Sally Bruce-Payne, Nancy Cole, Joseph Cornwell, Julian Podger, Matthew Brook and Johnny Herford. The orchestra, playing on early instruments, is led by Lucy Russell.

Twenty of the thirty six performers are alumni of the Music Department; many of the others have close links with the Department as regular performers and guest lecturers. Three of the singers - Charles Daniels, Bethany Seymour and Matthew Brook - were soloists with University Choir and Royal Northern Sinfonia in a performance of St Matthew Passion, conducted by Peter Seymour, in York Minster on 11 March 2015.
