He will be remembered internationally for his significant work in Composition, Music Technology, and Education, and will be missed as a warm-hearted and generous individual.
Richard Orton established the Department of Music's pioneering "project" teaching system, where students are grouped by topic for educational benefit, rather than by traditional administrative structures.
Richard was a founding member of the Cambridge University Press Journal Organised Sound. He also worked closely with the Composers' Desktop Project Ltd to bring advanced computer tools for composition, once located in institutions, within easy reach of individual composers.
We extend our sincere condolences to Richard's family.
