Lyons Celebration Award 2010 is awarded to Graham Bier and Edd Caine

Posted on 8 February 2011

The 2010 Lyons Celebration Award has been awarded to musicologist Graham Bier and composer Edward Caine, whose joint proposal is to investigate the development of a vernacular English psalmody.

Bier will prepare editions investigating the overlooked intentions of Thomas Tallis's tunes for Archbishop Matthew Parker's Psalter, and Caine will explore Parker's metrical translations and Tallis's music through composition. Along with the creation of new editions and compositions, the project will culminate in a performance that juxtaposes the new interpretation of Tallis's settings with related and contrasting settings and responses, with particular emphasis on the texts chosen by Leonard Bernstein for his Chichester Psalms.
