I traveled to Sydney and contacted the Music Sales office here having worked part time at Musicroom in York during my studies. Having interviewed with them they created a position for me as a Print Sales Coordinator two weeks after arriving in the country. I am now 10 weeks into this job and I firmly believe it is the first step in my career in the Music industry.
Definitely the Orchestra and ensembles. It was fantastic to be involved in such a variety of ensembles from Baroque to Contemporary and it really helped me become a well rounded musician and to appreciate lots of different styles and interpretations. Not to mention all the other players and conductors that I worked with who made the music so enjoyable and insightful. I also loved the inclusive nature of the students and staff, no matter what you needed you could always find students or staff to help you out or to support your ideas.
With the vast amount of experience in all aspects of music, York helped me develop my skills and become not only a well-rounded musician but a well-rounded person. The diversity of the course and the people associated with the department are all fantastic. The nature of the course enabled me to develop vital skills such as teamwork, leadership, self-motivation and time management, all of which have helped prepare me for my career.
Make the most of every opportunity York has to offer, join every ensemble you can and try as many different things as you can. You never know what you might discover! I started York without the slightest interest in contemporary music, but I left having helped organise the York Spring Festival of New Music, been the String fixer for Chimera (the new music ensemble) and having played in over 20 Chimera concerts! It is a great opportunity and if I could, I would do it all again in a heartbeat!
