The Department is equipped with an extensive range of instruments, studio equipment, scores, and recordings.
The Department of Music offers instrument loans to music students. The collection includes keyboards (pianos, organs, and period keyboards), orchestral instruments (wind, string, percussion, and early insruments), as well as instruments from around the world.
The John Paynter Music Library is an elegant facility, located within the University's J B Morrell Library, and houses the main music collections. It is also equipped with digital pianos, and media replay equipment. Students also have access to the York Minster Library.
The University of York Sound Archives (UYSA) consists of sound recording collections held at the University of York, available for teaching, research and listening. In particular, the UYSA specialises in non-commercial, off-air and unreleased recordings.
The Department boasts four state-of-the-art studios and plethora of microphones, recorders and other technology which students can use.
