George, MA 2014-15

I chose the MA in Culture and Thought after 1945 in order to build up a wider picture around specific research interests, and my time on the MA hasn't disappointed. After wider studies during my undergraduate at Cambridge, where I read for a BA in English, my time at York has allowed me to explore my chosen research focus through various subject and critical lenses, which is exactly what I sought in an MA program.

The best part about the MA for me has been the range of people I've been able to work with--both supervisors and fellow students. The huge mix of interests, subject disciplines, and different perspectives that everyone brings to this program has resulted in great debates, conversations, and has influenced my work to a great degree. I have no doubt this comes from the program's interdisciplinary focus, and has been the most valuable part of my experience at York, both intellectually and socially.

Finally, the support I have received from my supervisors has been invaluable. During my applications for PhD programs - which I will be undertaking after a year out - the wealth of experience and knowledge my supervisors had allowed me to really explore my options for PhD study. Their advice and encouragement opened my eyes to avenues of study I had never considered, and have made me a better student and applicant than I was before.
