Emelia

Emelia, MA student

I chose to study at York because the MA in Culture and Thought offered the greatest scope for the type of interdisciplinary study I wanted to undertake. Following a BA in Film and Literature from the University of Warwick I was keen to continue work in both of these areas.  The course has granted me the freedom to pursue a wide range of research interests where the taught aspect has expanded my horizons rather than limited the areas I can explore.

The facilities available within the Centre for Modern Studies, particularly the HRC, are unrivalled and I feel privileged to be part of such a thriving academic community. There are numerous opportunities for networking and I am currently involved in an oral history project with some PhD students in a local school. The MA has reinforced my passion for academic study and I intend to continue to study at York next year, pursuing a PhD in English. The support provided by my tutors has been invaluable in the application process. Furthermore, my supervisor's vested interest in my work has been central to my academic confidence, where I am now presenting work completed over my first term at academic conferences.

Emelia is now undertaking a PhD at the University of Oxford.
