Biography

Emmie Rose Price-Goodfellow completed her PhD in Medieval Studies at York in 2022. Her thesis, supervised by Dr Sethina Watson, explored the Cistercian exempla collections written before Caesarius of Heisterbach's famous Dialogus miraculorum. It asked how collections of exemplary miracle stories could work to form monks and nuns into ideal Cistercians. She is currently working to turn it into a monograph, tentatively entitled An Age of Example: Cistercian Exempla Collections 1170–1225. 

Broadly, Emmie's research interests are in the social and cultural histories of the medieval church, particularly interactions between marginalised groups and individuals and the organs of the church. With Tess Wingard, she runs the monthly 'Ideology, Society and Medieval Religion' seminar series, and they have recently published a special issue of the Journal of Medieval History on marginality and the medieval church.

Emmie's day job is however not in academic research but in public history media. She is a producer and writer on the BBC history podcast You're Dead To Me, and researches and writes on a variety of other programmes including Real Vikings and Short History Of. She is always working to present more cutting edge medieval scholarship to the public in entertaining and accessible formats.
