Fred came to York as Professor in 1967 and was Head of Department from then until 1977. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University between 1975 and 1981; this included a period as Acting Vice-Chancellor in 1978.
Fred's main mathematical interest was General Relativity, on which he gave a popular third-year option. He was a model of academic life for younger staff, who held him in great esteem and affection, and was much admired for his integrity, selflessness and sense of fair play.
