Athena SWAN Working Group

The Department's Athena SWAN working group aims to:

  • promote good practice and address the under-representation of women in mathematics;
  • ensure a supportive culture for all staff at all levels;
  • increase the number of female students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The group is part of the Equality and Good Practice Committee (EGPC). Current members are:‌‌‌

 

Stefan Weigert has been Chair of the Equality and Good Practice Committee since September 2018.

Niall MacKay became Head of Department in October 2015. Until 2010 Niall’s partner was a full-time academic at another UK university, and commuted weekly while their children attended the York Campus Nursery. He was instrumental in the introduction of a salary sacrifice scheme for nursery fees.

Niall is an ex officio member of the Equality and Good Practice Committee.

Cheri Mussell joined Mathematics as Department Manager in September 2018. She works full time but took the opportunity to reduce her working week whilst her son was at school. Cheri is an ex officio member of the Equality and Good Practice Committee.

Emilie Dufresne joined the Mathematics department in September 2018 and becomes Deputy Chair of the Equality and Good Practice Committee in August 2019. Emilie is also an academic representative member of the Equality and Good Practice Committee.

Degui Li is an academic representative of the Equality and Good Practice Committee and will be Head of Section for Statistics from September 2019. 
Benoit Vicedo joined the committee in September 2019 as an academic representative. 
Linda Elvin and Claire Farrar work on a job-share basis around family commitments, as P.A's. to the Head of Department and Department Manager. Linda and Claire are support staff representative members of the committee
Annabel Jenkins joined the committee as the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) representative in September 2019
Elizabeth Dickinson has been a Post-Doctoral member of the Equality and Good Practice Committee from September 2018 and is one of the lead members of the department's Early Career Research Group. 
Nora Szakacs joined the committee as a Post-Doctoral representative from September 2019. 
Matthew Thompson joined the committee as Post-Graduate representative in November 2019. 
Chris Oldnall and Aarti Prajapati joined the committee as Undergraduate representatives in January 2020
