Profile

Biography

Claire joined the School for Business and Society in 2018 after spending 15 years in Management Consulting with Accenture, working on large-scale transformational change programmes for global clients across a range of industries.  Claire worked on and led programmes as varied as:

  • Process re-engineering and re-skilling for 10,000 customer contact advisors in a call centre in India (consumer broadband sector).
  • Change management for the implementation of a new ERP system and processes for a submarine manufacturer.
  • Sales and delivery of projects within a multi-year learning outsourcing deal in the telecoms sector.
  • Digital rights management systems delivery for a global media and entertainment company based in the United States.
  • Process improvement programme in the factory environment of a global technology hardware company.
  • Change management for a major systems implementation at a gold mining company in Brazil and Canada.
  • Design and delivery of sales team training in the British aerospace and defence sector.

Throughout her time in management consulting, Claire regularly taught new graduate hires at Accenture's internal training centre in Chicago; a role which she found to be both fulfilling and enjoyable, and it was this experience that inspired her to consider a move to lecturing when the opportunity arose.

Since joining the School for Business and  as a teaching and scholarship focused lecturer, Claire has taught on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including Business Planning, Operations & Project Management, Foundations of Business Ethics, Human Resource Management in Context and Research Methods.  She has been the leader for the Business Planning module since 2019.

Claire is passionate about applying practical examples from her experience in industry throughout her teaching, to explain, reinforce and critique academic theory and, within the Business Planning module in particular, aims to intertwine the teaching and learning of academic knowledge with the opportunity to develop employability skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, peer review and teamwork.

Claire regularly engages with entrepreneurs and business leaders to share their experiences and learnings with students and has hosted several lectures as part of the popular UYMS masterclass series.  She is also an academic observer/coach on The University of York's flagship employability programme, York Strengths.

In September 2021 Claire became PG Admissions Tutor and as part of this role she hosts termly virtual and in-person open days to prospective postgraduate students.

In 2022, Claire gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP).  She also achieved status as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and as a Certified Management and Business Educator (CMBE).

Additionally, Claire is Chair of Governors for a local primary school and is an active member of the University of York's School Governance Network.
