How to be hugely successful in marketing
Building a career in marketing
The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and The York Management School teamed up to deliver a marketing careers event titled: “How to be hugely successful in marketing”. The event attracted great interest from 180 students from York and beyond, as well as practitioners within marketing – and those aiming to change careers into marketing.
The evening started with a presentation by graduates of the MSc Global Marketing at York; Camilla Mazzitelli, Account Executive at Cheetham Bell JWT, and Jack Watkins, Category Executive FMCG at SCA. In their talk, Camilla and Jack shared their experience on securing jobs in advertising and category management respectively after graduation. They passed on their insights on the key challenges that they, as new marketers, faced when starting out and how to secure that first marketing job after graduating. Christina Morrison, Global Marketing Manager at thebigword, then shared her top tips to becoming a successful marketing manager as well as on how you can take an unconventional route into marketing. That was followed by Jennifer Potter, a management consultant, whose presentation focused on the soft skills needed to be a successful marketer and particularly to successfully manage teams. Finally, Lawrence Christensen, Group Marketing Director at Benenden, shared his views on the extra skills required to make a great marketer. The presentations were followed by a long and interesting Q&A session.
