Wednesday 5 October 2022, 10.00AM to 12:00pm
Speaker(s): Martin Dreyer BA BMus
The piano trio – for piano and two other instruments, usually violin and cello – evolved only gradually, as composers wrestled to write for three instruments within the constraints of sonata style. A peak was reached with Beethoven and Schubert. The later Romantics gave it a new lease of life. In the twentieth century, Ravel, Fauré, Bridge and Martinu, among others, took up the cudgels. Its fascinating evolution, rivalled in chamber music only by the string quartet, will be fully illustrated and thoroughly explored.
