Joan Beaufort’s second marriage: a cause of the Wars of the Roses?

Saturday 18 February 2023, 10.00AM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Gillian Waters BA MA PGDip PGCE

Joan Beaufort’s second marriage to Ralph Neville of Raby, Earl of Westmorland, had devastating consequences for the North. Ralph effectively disinherited the children of his first wife to promote the interests of Joan’s children, and this led to decades of feuding which continued into the Wars of the Roses. The Beaufort Nevilles were Yorkists, whilst the senior line of Nevilles remained staunchly Lancastrian. This day school will examine the life of Joan Beaufort, half-sister of Henry IV, and the consequences of her marriage.
