History of Medieval Women I: Warriors and Saints

Wednesday 5 October 2022, 7.00PM to 9:00pm

Early Medieval Chronicles usually focus on the lives of epic heroes, their brothers and their sons. Women are conspicuous by their absence. The Venerable Bede was the first to offer a glimpse of the lives of saintly Anglo-Saxon women. Later chroniclers also praised the bravery of warrior princesses who led their armies to victories. This course will offer a study of Anglo-Saxon women, by analysing archaeological findings, documentary evidence and manuscript illuminations.
