Saturday 28 May 2022, 10.00AM to 1:15PM
Speaker(s): Maddy Potter PhD
From John Polidori’s The Vampyre, to Le Fanu’s Carmilla and Stoker’s Dracula, and through to modern representations, we look at the history of the literary vampire and ask why its figure has endured. Through psychological analysis and socio-historical contextualising, we will attempt to uncover the vampire’s appeal, and how it both fascinates and instils fear. We will explore the human anxieties and preoccupations buried in the image of the vampire, and ask whether these have changed or remained the same.
