From Tunisia to Egypt: early Islamic Art in North Africa

Saturday 19 March 2022, 10.00AM to 1.15pm

Speaker(s): Roberta Marin MA

In this course we will virtually travel to North Africa and analyse the advent of Islam on the countries facing the Mediterranean Sea. We will examine the evolution of the artistic production under the Aghlabids (800-909), who chose Kairouan (Tunisia) as their capital, and the legendary Fatimids (909-1171), who founded Cairo and extended their political government to Sicily. We will look at the imposing mosques and the remarkable carved objects made of ivory, rock crystal and wood.
