How do we interpret the past? What stories do we tell, and why? In the nineteenth century, history painting and historical fiction emerged as ways of depicting the past - some supporting, some challenging official state-backed narratives. Through dramatic and colourful images, we can explore political conflicts, contested cultural and national identities, and art as historical propaganda from Britain and France to Poland and Russia.
