Influenced by great buildings of Byzantium and the Muslim East, the Normans revolutionised Northern European ecclesiastical architecture in the eleventh-twelfth centuries. On the Continent, their style is known as Romanesque, in England it is called Norman and in southern Italy and Sicily, Arab-Norman. This course will study paradigmatic monasteries built by the Normans in Normandy, England and Italy. It will focus on the abbeys’ architecture and art, set against the backdrop of Norman political domination.
This course will be delivered via Zoom. Students joining the course will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet with a microphone (essential) and a webcam (desirable) as well as a reliable broadband connection.
