Known as La Serenissima, the Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times. From its humble origins as a refuge from invading barbarians to its dominance of the Mediterranean and its rule of Constantinople, Venice has fascinated visitors and historians alike. This course will study the history of Venice from its origins to the arrival of Napoleon.
